At the water’s edge

We all stand at the water’s edge at least once in our life. Whether it is a jumping off point for some great new adventure, or fighting the demons inhabit the deepest, darkest part of our soul, at some point, we all stand there. We stand there, hoping that the solemn nature of the water whisking across the bank, grants us the serenity to continue our journey. We respect the fierce nature that is rumbling beneath the surface, not to far removed from the nature of humanity. You can deny yourself the reality that you have been there, but deep down, you know that you have.

Standing there, we contemplate where our life’s journey has taken us, and dream about where we are headed. It is there, in the calm of the water, right at the edge of roaring rapids beneath the surface, that we make the decision to alter our course for all of eternity. Maybe it is taking that job that separates you from your family for an extended period of time. For others, it may be chasing their life’s dream. Sadly for some, the outcome isn’t a positive one.

We never truly know the paths that our friends, our family, or simply our acquaintances have taken. We never really know, when we reach the water’s edge, what will become of the future. We all go there in hopes of enlightenment, hoping that the answer to those burning questions will come rushing from the under current, washing over our soul, and the future will be bright and clear. We hope that the water will wash us clean, take our troubles and send them out to sea, bury them for ever. Trusting that we can basque in the calm waters at the edge of out of control. Wondering if we will find what we are searching for there in that moment.

The reality of the matter is, you have to walk out into the current, you have to feel the power come at you full force. It is there that we find our peace. We find out just how strong we are, the weight that our shoulders can bare. We have to, in our own way, continue our journey. We are the only ones who can decide where the road is going to take us. In that moment when you decide to take the leap from the calm current into the roaring rapids, the turmoil, the whirlwind of emotion, that we see clearly that path that we must take.

We never really know when we will reach the water’s edge, it just kind of happens. Life happens so fast, so furious, that you’ve got to grab the wheel, put the hammer down, wheels spinning on the edge of control, and ride full steam ahead into a vast unknown. All along the way picking up the passengers that will become our lives. Our family, our friends, acquaintances that we have a lasting impact on. All the while, barrelling down the winding road of life. Some travel it at unsustainable speeds and burn out, long before their time. Others take that road slow and steady, feeling like they are always in control. Only to find one day that the feeling of control they felt they had, was just that, a feeling. That is the point in which they reach the water’s edge.

We all will get there, if we haven’t already been. We will stop, turn around, look at the road we have traveled, for some it is covered in rubber and smoke, from a hell bound journey that has affected the lives of everyone they touched, and in that moment, know that no matter which way the water takes them, they will find themselves in the calm shallow waters, invigorated from the roaring rapids, ready to write the next chapter of their journey.
